RIM has announced its stance on jailbreaking BlackBerry products and declared that it will quickly squash any jailbreak methods that arise.
-- On hearing reports of a jailbreak for a BlackBerry product, the BBSIRT will quickly triage the underlying issue and method used to perform the jailbreak. If it falls into the first category, where extensive user interaction is required, we will seek to address it in a future software update. If it falls into the second category (where a vulnerability is exposed with little to no user interaction), that is an indication of a more serious underlying issue and will most likely result in the release of a security update to address it as soon as possible. When this happens, my team publishes a security advisory or notice. These notifications typically offer an assessment of the issue and the required steps customers should take to resolve the vulnerability.
To be clear, RIM recommends against installing any jailbreaking tool. Customers who use a jailbreaking tool on BlackBerry products void the manufacturer warranty and also increase the long-term risk of negatively impacting the stability and user experience of their BlackBerry products. Use of a jailbreaking tool could also amplify the impact and severity of a future security issue, making your personal data more vulnerable to theft and more difficult to protect. If new jailbreaks for BlackBerry products are reported, rest assured that we will evaluate them and take appropriate action to help protect customers. --
As company that's sinking, perhaps following Microsoft's lead might be a better way to deal with jailbreaks.
Umm, hate to break the news to you, but apple does NOT squash jailbreaks. They copy the code and install it as default software two phones later. The JB community has put more time and effort into this than RIM has.
By the way, the US Army is not issuing blackberries anymore. Software is a headache hardware problems...
If i were a stock holder, i would sell...
Bill
WHAAAAAAT? RIM is still in business?? Who still has a blackberry? Users don't need emails right away anymore, and if they do....you better believe they have found ways to get this WITHOUT using a blackberry. iOS and Android have taken over, plain and simple. RIM should go talk to Microsoft and see how they enjoy the sour grapes.
RIM will have total success with that simply because you really really can not jailbreak a device that you never would buy, steal or accept as a gift....
ROFL
A) I never heard such a term as JB a blackberry
B) could someone send link as to how to do JB for BB?
Rim you should really concentrate on software not hardware as its your cash cow !
Bbm cross platform would be ace
Lol. RIM. Wont allow Jailbreak. Lol. Who cares! They're anyways hardly selling their tablets after the price reduction, and if they don't allow jailbreaking, its gooodbye RIM.
Its a desperate attempt to stay in the conversation and to reassure Corporate IT to stay with RIM..
Afterglow of a meteoric career... Indeed, BB's are going down the Nokia path..
Blackberry is going to be obsolete if not its already is ...
Nobody uses a blackberry ...Long live an IPHONE4S as matter of fact apple is taking over the world...Like Hitler..lol
I see in the not to distant future RIM/Blackberrys going the way of the dodo just like Palm/HP devices if they don't figure something out soon. I see them either filing for bankruptcy and restructuring, selling and restructuring, or trying to license/open source their OS and maybe try to market BBM as a cross platform messaging app on iOS,android and windows phones. Or they're just going to kick the bucket.
Dear RIM,
I would try focusing more on the stability of your company before you start wasting resources on something as little as users Jailbreaking your devices.
You should be thankful for the Jailbreaks, they're the only reason people are still buying your crappy products.
I have a BB for my work and it is good for nothing. It freezes just doing it's primary function... making a phone call. The phone is only a couple months old. Everyone in the company hates blackberry now. It's not even worth the time to jailbreak.
And in other RIM news this month, the company slit both its wrists in another attempt at attention. Unfortunately, nobody has noticed, and the company continues to bleed.
Really, this is a no-win situation. The right thing to do, normally, would be to allow an easy method for jailbreaking. However, RIM's only remaining *perceived* advantage is security, so they need to plug any holes that would allow jailbreaking, as well as any impact jailbreaking may have.
