iOS 3.1.3 Users Are No Longer Able to Use Mobile App Store?

iPhone and iPod touch users who are still on iOS 3.1.3 are reportedly unable to use the App Store on their devices to download new applications, according to a growing thread on Apple's support forum.

Engadget notes that "While users of older iPod Touches and iPhones stuck on 3.1.3 by choice or incompatibility with newer OSes can still update the apps they already have and transfer software from iTunes on a computer, they can't buy or install new ones directly from the device. We were able to confirm the issue on one of our own devices, while there's a pretty lengthy thread in Apple's support forum about the issue, but no official response yet."

The original post on the matter came from mwiesner who reported the following issues with the App Store.
1) clicking on the price no longer downloads the app,
2) the ratings button does nothing,
3) the 'tell a friend' and 'git this app' buttons jump back to the top of the app window,
4) pictures usually don't show up. They usually appear as five gray rectangular boxes with white borders (though in one app one too-large-for-the-window picture shows up (see pic),
5) the 'app support' button still goes to the developer's website.
6) the 'top in-app purchases' banner is just text now.

We'll let you know if Apple takes any steps to resolve this issue.

anyone running 3.1.3 is likely jailbroken and now apple is going to force them to use programs like hackulous to get apps. good for apple to force stealing. anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about use google.

The Original iPhone is the only phone stuck at iOS 3.1.3. It came out a whopping 4.5 years ago, in June 2007. That's significantly before the first Android phone, the G1. Not a single phone this old, from any manufacturer, is still supported. Indeed, Apple is unique in having supported this phone through 3 full major iOS versions. The 1st generation iPod Touch is in the same boat and is also more than 4 years old. The iPhone 3G, which is 3.5 years old, is upgradable to iOS 4.2.1, which does not have most of the performance issues of the original iOS 4.0 release. It's quite reasonable to expect people to update to this version if they still want to be able to download new apps. In other words, Apple has supplied a path. Users who choose to avoid it are doing so purposefully. So, the 3G is fully supported by the app store despite being older than the first Android phone, which officially unsupported past v1.6. All other iPod Touches are in this category as well. One app developer has published analytics for the developer's app indicating that only 0.36% of users are on devices stuck at iOS 3.1.3. The remainder are capable of updating and 97.2% of them have indeed already updated to iOS 4.1 or higher. So, even if the original story is true, complaining loudly about it (and especially shouting things like "this should be illegal") seems utterly absurb.

To make things clear, if you have a first gen iPhone you should not update to ios4. If you unfortunately did it will run like crap and you should have been warned. Not completely your fault. See if apple can somehow put an older version back on. Also most app developers unfortunately do not make their apps backward compatible. A screw up on apples SDK. So lots of apps require latest iOS. Kinda stupid, so older iOS won't run lots of apps. Hopefully apple addresses this at some point, but Unlikley.

First of all a "1st Gen iPhone (iPhone 2G) isn't capable of running iOS4. Only iPhone 3G (Which is limited to 4.2.1) and then 3GS, 4, & 4s which can still run the most current iOS, however don't expect to run iOS6 on your 3G. With the iPhone 2G & 3G You can always downgrade back to what ever version you like. Just like the 3GS can ALWAYS be downgraded back to 4.1 (Other versions require SHSH blobs). The sad truth is, if you want to keep using apps you'll have to pirate them now that apple has screwed you. Also you can find older versions of apps online, and some apps even work on older firmwares if you spoof the fw version or edit a bit of the apps code.

Chill out dude. Firstly, if it's iPhone we're talking about, and you bought a first or second gen device 3 years ago, unless you're in new Zealand you should be eligible for an upgrade. So no 700$ is needed. iPod touches are only 200$. So unless you have to buy out of contract, relax. You should have upgraded by now, or accept obsolescence. It's old unfortunately and may no longer be supported. Of course this could also all be a misunderstanding and go back to working in 2 days. So again, just chill. It's just a comment on an insignificant website. You're not going to change the world by correcting an ignorant troll.

I have the 4s so frankly I don't have any problems. Its just a tick off when people have to treat others like they are the shit and other people are nothing. I was just putting him in his place. Maybe, just maybe he would get off his high horse.

First off it's 4.5 yrs old not 6. Second. While newer apps don't work that's fine but the store should still work for the apps that still work with that version of the OS for that device. Also 4.5 yrs old is not old as dirt, a device should at least last 7-10 yrs even if support is limited. I have a TV that is 15 yrs old and still runs great should I buy a new one just because it's old? Well that's my choice. If your 4 yr old TV stopped working simply because it was 4 yrs old wouldn't you be pissed? Yea I think you would. Hopefully apple will get it fixed for those older devices and the only thing is they won't get to run software that is only supported by the newer OS.

It just does that on certain apps. I just downloaded iReddit. Maybe just updates blocked if they don't run on ios3.
