It appears that Apple is already selling the iPhone 4S unlocked in the U.S., according to iOS developer Steven Troughton-Smith.

9to5Mac reported today that "select Apple Stores in the United States have begun selling contract-free versions of the iPhone 4S, which our friend Steven Troughton-Smith was able to both verify and purchase."

Apple previously indicated that it would not be possible to purchase an unlocked iPhone 4S until November.

Steven Troughton-Smith is the developer who is working towards porting Siri to the iPhone 4.

its true when you buy the iphone 4s make sure its not an upgrade, a new line with att, tell the clerk that you want to buy it straight up. you don't want the imei number to tied up to anything then sync with itunes me and my friends did it and it works

this is an iPhone 4S look at the side it has the new steel enclosure that are only found in the Verizon iPhone and iPhone 4S. Look at the black line, thats the enclosure.

No, he didn't. Apple hasn't even released the unlocked iPhone 4S in the states. It's a ruse, & you are looking at an iPhone 4, just like I have on T-Mobile. Got off the phone with Apple a few minutes ago, that's how I know. Please remove this article, for it's a lie.

Really? Ok then, go and buy one. Then we will see. Why don't you ask him to take a shot of the T-Mobile logo with Siri up?

The phone is one of two things: 1. An actual iPhone 4S or 2. A CDMA iPhone 4 jailbroken with a custom carrier name made to match T-Mobile. Without a shot of Siri, you can't tell which one it is.

no really? apple wont tell you its available because technically its not. some stores get the shipment early just like a few preorders were received early. I was just at the apple store today, I asked if they were available and I was told they were but supply was limited. im good with my factory unlocked iphone 4 and i'm getting a free at&t 4s in a week anyway, so i'll just sell that and buy the unlocked 4s then

I know that they are selling contract free at the moment (around my area) but not unlocked one
digihead
digihead - October 16, 2011 at 2:08pm
so what is "contract free" then?
I
I - October 16, 2011 at 2:36pm
Simply means they're allowing the sale of the device off-contract and not requiring service activation. Or put another way, they are selling the device w/o subsidies at the full price.

And then what? How you activate device on which network? Atleast here in Scotland you either get phone on contract locked on network or get it for full price from network w/o contract as pre pay phone and apple store sells you unlocked phone
