HTC Chairwoman Cher Wang says the company has been considering the purchase of webOS from HP, reports FocusTaiwan.
After the global PC heavyweight Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) announced on Aug. 18 a plan to spin off its PC business and stop sales of its TouchPad tablet that uses the WebOS operating system, a slew of manufacturers like HTC and Samsung reportedly have been trying to acquire the WebOS platform to expand their mobile market reach.
"We have given it thought and we have discussed it internally, but we will not do it on impulse," Wang said in an interview with the Economic Observer of China.
Wang believes HTC's advantages lie in its ability to make unique products on any operating system. "We can use any OS we want. We are able to make things different from our rivals on the second or third layer of a platform," Wang said. "Our strength lies in understanding an OS, but it does not mean that we have to produce an OS."
Although, HTC says Google made the right move by purchasing Motorola, its interest in purchasing an operating system of its own suggests that it may be looking to reduce its dependance on Android.
