Samsung Unveils 2560x1600 10.1-inch Display Paving Way for Retina Display iPad

Samsung is unveiling a 2560x1600 10.1-inch display next week paving the way for a Retina Display iPad.

At the SID Display Week 2011 International Symposium (LA Convention Center, Booth 707) May 17-19, Samsung Electronics is demonstrating the industry’s first 10.1-inch WQXGA (2560 x 1600) format PenTile™ RGBW tablet display, an ultra-high resolution, liquid crystal display (LCD). The prototype demonstration marks the first time this resolution has been available for the tablet market in the popular – 10.1-inch – format, rivaling the highest resolution smartphone displays now on the market. Samsung expects to have commercial availability of this technology for tablet applications later this year.

PenTile RGBW WQXGA Technology Highlights
● This 10.1-inch tablet panel is capable of 300 cd/m2 of luminance, yet uses 40 percent less power than that used by legacy RGB stripe LCDs in power-saving modes.
● An outdoor brightness mode of as much as 600 cd/m2 luminance enables viewing in bright ambient lighting.
● The display’s color gamut is 72 percent., allowing greater color realism than legacy RGB stripe tablet displays that have a typical color gamut of 55 percent NTSC.
● PenTile technology achieves 300 dpi resolution with two-thirds the number of subpixels, maintaining the VESA/ICDM display resolution standard.

The current iPad has a resolution of 1024x768. Apple is expected to double this resolution to 2048x1536. That resolution is still significantly less than the new Samsung display.

I think Apple will have to give up the 10-hours battery life for this....

This is a PenTile display. PenTiles displays look like ass. They use simulated pixels. This screen is an ugly lie.

it achieves 298.8 PPI, and NOT 300. sqrt(2560^2+1600^2)/10.1

The aspect ratio of this display is obviously wrong for an iPad. On top of that, though, Apple has also been preferring IPS displays for iPhone and iPad for the superior viewing angle and a 3-subpixel structure for better rendering of smaller text. However, I'm sure cranking up the manufacturing for this display will also lower costs for other high-res displays.

i'm quite sure that the extreme increase in pixel density would compensate for a less-ideal subpixel layout anyway.

BullShit - powersaving my ass.. if you know how computers work it will need a lot more prosessingpower (=power) to spin double the amount of pixels on screen. Meaning shorter batterylife and slower responce times... maybe the difference on normal usage makes not such a big difference but imagine running e.g. fps-game on that resolution - needs bloody external display adapter to run it smoothly :D Anyway im sure they will figure it out - maybe just multiple prosessors and space techology - Radioactive battery....
