The New York Times is reporting that Apple will not introduce a smaller iPhone any time soon.

Another person who is in direct contact with Apple also said that the company would not make a smaller iPhone at this time, in part because a smaller device would not necessarily be much cheaper to manufacture and because it would be more difficult to operate.

The NYT says Apple’s engineers are currently focused on finishing the iPhone 5 which will be similar in size to the iPhone 4 and should be ready for this summer. However, they do suggest Apple might release a cheaper device.

"Although the innards of the phone, including memory size or camera quality, could change to offer a less expensive model, the size of the device would not vary." said their source.

Both the WSJ and Bloomberg have published contradictory reports predicting that Apple intends to launch a smaller iPhone.

The new device is intended to be sold alongside the current line of iPhones and would be about half the size of the iPhone 4. The phone, one of its codenames is N97, would be available to mobile carriers at about half the price of Apple's main line of iPhones
