Apple to Merge iTunes Into Safari?

Apple may be preparing to merge iTunes and Safari into one software solution, according to Three Guys and a Podcast.

Apple may be preparing a massive move that will propel Safari from niche browser to market leader. The move to merge Safari and iTunes into one software solution appears long in the works, which may arrive this fall at Apple's usual iPod special event.

The site suggests that Apple is looking to make the change to propel the poor performing Safari browser which has reached just 4.46% of browser market share as of December 2010.

It is believed that Safari will be the only browser able to access iTunes, as iTunes is built into the browser itself. "Moving iTunes organizational side-bar into Safari isn't a monumental task" claimed a source, adding "Safari would skyrocket in use as a result of integrating the software titles together."

Just had a strange experience that would point to this being true: When I view an app in the iTunes web preview, and then click the "View in iTunes link, instead of iTunes going to that app's iTunes page, it actually displays the same preview page in iTunes! So it appears iTunes is acting as a browser here, actually displaying a webpage. I can only assume that it's a glitch based on the fact that there's already some Safari code in there, which would of course point to a merge of the two programs at some point.

I imagine that would really suck... itunes is quite a hangy program by itself would sure make your safari hang up even more often... Besides why not go further then and merge calculator into garage band or activity manager into mail... Sometimes they should innovate a bit less, it'd be really nice if ping disappeared for isntance...

It will stay the same, people will simply launch Safari for Itunes and use their browser for everything else... It might even hurt them, as people who play songs on itunes might move to another application. Also, I'm sure hacks will appear to make firefox etc weork just like itunes.

I agreed with Joe. Typical of Apple forcing people to use their inferior products. They are doing this so they can say their inferior product "Safari" has 1 million downloads this month or that month.
