British mobile phone company '3', a unit of Hutchison Whampoa, based in Hong Kong, has announced it will offer unlimited mobile Internet access to U.K. customers starting tomorrow, according to the NYT.
"This is another maverick move by a known disrupter," said Emma Mohr-McClune, an analyst based in Germany for Current Analysis, a research firm in Sterling, Virginia. "I don’t think this is going to set a trend, but if 3 takes market share, it might."
3 has six million phone customers in total, including about 1.5 million mobile Internet customers. The company’s basic mobile broadband package, called The One Plan, costs £25, or $39.50, a month and, before the announcement Tuesday, limited Internet downloads to 1 gigabyte a month. Customers over the limit had to pay 10 pence for every additional downloaded megabyte.
3 is also allowing customers to tether. Hopefully this catches on with the other mobile networks.
Shame Three is abysmal for quality of service. Having no data cap is useless when they start throttling your bandwidth to sub-dialup levels once you have the audacity to actually use more than a few hundred megs a month...
You can already ring up Three at any point during your contract that comes with 1GB as standard, moan a bit and get an extra 2GB no questions asked. I managed to blag 6GB/month total, along with billions of minutes and texts, for £20/month.
I'd rather be with a network with a 500MB cap that can actually deliver all that data without slowing like a paraplegic mule. After a massive stroke. Whilst on ketamine.
.
I read this and have to offer a different view entirely!
My 4 is unlocked, I've tried all networks on monthly sims since I've had it.
Out of all the major networks T-Mobile was the best, until I had network issues and decided I'd try 3 out of curiosity.
I haven't looked back! I'm getting blazing 3G almost everywhere, 2G signal-never ever seen a 'no service' message.
I get a 2GB cap for £15 a month!! Bloody bargain.
I'm in Oxford, fantastic signal everywhere I go.
I recommend them all the way personally.
