For those wondering, the new multi-touch iPod nano does not run iOS. This was confirmed to CultofMac backstage at yesterday's event by an Apple spokesperson.
So for those hoping to be able to jailbreak the device and install various widgets, this may not be possible.
Interestingly, it seems that the Apple TV is in fact running iOS; although this wasn't mentioned at all in the keynote.
According to Daring Fireball's John Gruber, "The device is running iOS, though, trust me. So its possible that some sort of SDK is coming in the future. But Im not going to hold my breath. Judging from the demo today, I think the fact that its running iOS under the hood is just an implementation detail."

Hello? Great news for the jailbreak/hack community. iOS4 duh! And the clever little mini-usb 'service' port (memory anyone). Shades (exact) of the old AppleTV PLUS the iPod/iPhone crowd. Oh, and how about a trackpad for touch control.
Game Center is next for AppleTV. Apple just needs to reinvent the joystick like they have the mouse and trackpad. XBox, Playstation, and Wii are in their crosshairs. With a $99 price point, a new focus on gaming, and hundreds of existing games it's only a matter of time.
This makes sense.
Apple doesn't plan on having apps for the nano, thus it's in their interest to close it off to the jailbreaking community.
Apple does plan on having Apple TV apps (although not in store for this version), so they've got the platform ready to go when they turn this on (for future models)
