Mark Papermaster, Apple Senior VP of Hardware Engineering, has left the company in the wake of widely reported iPhone 4 antenna problems.
According to the New York Times it is not clear if he was ousted or left on his own accord.
Apple spokesman, Steve Dowling, confirmed the departure saying that Papermaster "is leaving the company and Bob Mansfield, senior vice president of Macintosh hardware engineering, is assuming his responsibilities."
Observant readers may have noticed that Papermaster was not present at the iPhone 4 press conference. DaringFireball's John Gruber says, "from what I’ve heard, it’s clear he was canned. Papermaster was a conspicuous absence at the Antennagate press conference. Inside Apple, he’s "the guy responsible for the antenna" — that’s a quote from a source back on July 23. (Another quote from the same source: "Apparently the antenna guys used to have a big chip on their shoulder. No more.")"
Hard luck Mr. Papermaster. You are the fall guy. It is likely that there were other key players in allowing the prod. of the model to continue, with the flaw/defect. Cheers.
First off it is doubtful if he was even responsible for the antenna since he only came to work for Apple a year ago. Furthermore I doubt that a 'hardware engineer' would be responsible for something that is clearly a design flaw. But then again, Steve can't (certainly won't) fire himself and Jon Ivey as his creative executioner won't have to worry either.
