Samsung today took the wraps off the Galaxy Z Fold7, its latest flagship foldable smartphone, packing an ultra-thin design, a larger display, and a suite of on-device AI capabilities. The announcement places the Z Fold7 as a major competitor in a market Apple is also rumored to be entering, with reports suggesting the company is deep in development of its own foldable iPhone.
The new Z Fold7 is the company's thinnest and lightest foldable yet, measuring 8.9mm when folded and 4.2mm when unfolded, with a weight of 215 grams. It features a wider 6.5-inch cover screen and an expansive 8-inch main display. Samsung says the device is built for durability, with an "Armor FlexHinge" designed to reduce creasing, a titanium plate layer in the main display, and a new Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 on the cover.
Powering the Z Fold7 is a customized Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor, which the company says delivers significant boosts to its CPU, GPU, and NPU performance to better handle on-device AI tasks. The camera system has been upgraded to a 200MP wide-angle main camera, a 10MP front-facing camera on the main display, and a 10MP telephoto camera.
The device runs on One UI 8, based on Android 16, which brings a new suite of "Galaxy AI" features to the foldable. These include real-time language translation, an enhanced "Circle to Search" function with pop-up gaming tips, and AI-powered photo editing tools like Photo Assist and Audio Eraser. The system also integrates Google's Gemini AI, which can respond to what a user is seeing through the camera or on screen. This is particularly notable as Google has been in talks to bring Gemini to the iPhone as well.
This launch comes as Apple is reportedly preparing to enter the foldable market in late 2026. Rumors suggest Apple's foldable iPhone will feature a premium titanium design with a metallic glass hinge and an inner display that's 19% thinner than previous foldable panels.
Pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold7 are live now ahead of its July 25 launch. The device starts at $1899.99 for the 256GB model, with Samsung offering several launch promotions. Customers can get a free upgrade to 512GB of storage (a $150 value) and can save up to $1,200 with a combination of instant and trade-in credits. The new Z Flip7 and a budget-friendly Z Flip7 FE were also announced, with their own storage and trade-in offers.
