Snapchat has unveiled its first hardware product dubbed Spectacles. The video taking sunglasses will record up to 10 seconds of footage for sharing. You tap a button near the hinge to begin recording.
Spectacles' camera has a 115 degree angle lens that is closer to your eyes' natural field of view. The video recorded is circular, similar to human vision. Evan Spiegel, CEO of Snapchat (now renamed Snap Inc), says that the glasses free you from having to hold your phone up 'like a wall in front of your face'.
Spiegel describes his experience with the glasses to the WSJ.
“It was our first vacation, and we went to Big Sur for a day or two. We were walking through the woods, stepping over logs, looking up at the beautiful trees. And when I got the footage back and watched it, I could see my own memory, through my own eyes—it was unbelievable. It’s one thing to see images of an experience you had, but it’s another thing to have an experience of the experience. It was the closest I’d ever come to feeling like I was there again.”
For now, Snapchat is calling Spectacles a toy. The glasses will be priced at $129.99 and will roll out slowly this fall. “We’re going to take a slow approach to rolling them out,” says Spiegel. “It’s about us figuring out if it fits into people’s lives and seeing how they like it.”
You'll be able to get Spectacles in black, teal or coral. Hit the link below for more details...
