Apple has revealed that its Maps app is used 3x as often as its next leading competitor (Google Maps) on the iPhone and iPad, reports the Boston Globe. The mapping service now sees over 5 billion map-related requests each week.
Google Maps is still the most used mapping application for smartphones as Apple Maps isn't available on Android. In October, Google Maps had over twice as many smartphone users as Apple Maps.
When Apple Maps first debuted on iOS it was plagued with problems but Apple has gradually improved the service and turned into one of the best mapping services available.
“We are fast learners and we are fast at fixing things,” said Apple VP Greg “Joz” Joswiak. “We learned the maps business incredibly fast.”
The Boston Globe says that Apple is now collecting data from over 3,000 sources for business listings, traffic and other information.
In adding transit, Apple sent teams to map out subway entrances and signs. That results in more precise walking directions, as stations can stretch for blocks and the center point used by some services isn’t necessarily the closest. Apple also started sending out vehicles with sensors to map roads, similar to Google’s longstanding practice.
Apple says its not finished improving Maps and it definitely still has some work to do, especially in rolling out transit directions. However, the service is now good enough that most users aren't turning to third party products instead.
Let us know Maps performs in your area. Do you still use Google Maps or are you happy with Apple Maps?
Apple Maps is not very useful in Switzerland. It does not provide information on public transportation which is much more used by people in Switzerland and many other countries in Europe.
Apple Maps always give wrong locations here in Minneapolis. Most people I know who used it have always gone to the wrong place. Even transit info is off quite a bit. Google Maps works the best here.
Until they add the ability to avoid tolls, Google will be my exclusive navigating option. They're so close to having a viable mapping option yet so far away from what Google has going on.
I always used apple maps and found it fun to enjoy because of how 3D it makes everything look and how it pans around stuff like you're actually seeing it, but mostly I like it because of how I can use it with just location on the go when traveling. I haven't found one problem with it tbh.
I love Apple phone and ipad but not apple map. I'm a courier, I deliverr in Saratoga, CA at night in the dark, Saratoga there is no street light, with google maps, I stop right on the spot.. Right at the front door.
I won't deny that Google Maps is better. But as the article states, Apple Maps doesn't have to be the best, it just have to be good enough that people don't have to look for alternatives.
I travelled to Singapore (mostly Orchard area) recently, and I only had to use Apple Maps (default Maps app on the iPhone/Apple Watch). It found the type of food I was looking for, the leisure activities, and the shopping centres.
In other words, I felt it did just enough.
I don't know where you people live, in my area apple maps is useless. "No results found". The businesses that are on the map are mostly wrong, often doubble...
I live in India and I have made pretty good research on the best mapping app. And my verdict is that in my country google maps is the best. It gives precise locations and the best feature that it has offline maps which is not there in apple maps
Same here in Kuwait. Apple maps simply doesn't work. Miss the good old days when Apple use to use google for its map application. Life was simpler back then.
Apple maps still suck. The only reason it's used so much is apple sets it up as the default software and won't let you change it. Most people are lazy and won't take the extra steps to use google exclusively.
