Google has announced 10 new apps that have added support for its Chromecast wireless media streaming device.
Just in time for the holidays, 10 new apps have been added to the Chromecast family. Beginning today you can enjoy action sports, news, music videos, and more with the addition of VEVO, Red Bull.TV, Songza, PostTV, Viki, Revision 3 and BeyondPod.
And for those many holiday gatherings, you can also cast your personal media straight to your TV using Plex, Avia, or RealPlayer Cloud apps. There’s no need to huddle around small screens when you can share your own photos and videos using your phone, tablet, or laptop.
A list of apps that support Chromecast can be found here. You can purchase the Chromecast dongle here.
The problem with Chromecast (for an iOS user, at least) is that it's tied to media apps, instead of anything that's on my device (like AirPlay). Frequently, I want to show my family the latest pictures I took, rather than play them a movie I just bought and that they've probably already seen.
Chromecast only works with specified apps and a modified Chrome browser, so I can't play my games on the TV, I can't show the whole family the Skype conversation I'm having, and I can't easily share photos or movies I took.
I considered buying one (for all of 3 minutes), but figured it was too limited yet. I already have plenty of ways to buy movies as it is.
Chromecast never advertised to be any of those things you are trying to accomplish, they advertised streaming certain apps from your device to your TV. That's kinda like buying a car and expecting it to drive for you, you know the capabilities of it, make the right purchase for you. I'm afraid this device isn't that for you.
