WhatsApp Messenger, a popular cross platform messaging application, is in talks to be acquired by Facebook, according to TechCrunch.
Whatsapp, the multiplatform mobile messaging app that has been one of the runaway success stories for ad-free, paid services, has been in talks to be acquired by Facebook, according to sources close to the matter. We’re still digging around on potential price and other details about how advanced the deal is. But as mobile becomes the latest battleground in the Internet’s game of thrones, you can see how such a deal could make sense.
A year ago, WhatsApp was serving a billion messages a day. Today, it sits at the number two position on the App Store's Top Paid list and likely serves even more messages per day.
You can purchase WhatsApp Messenger from the App Store for $0.99.
FB did the same to Buluga Messenger by buying it, then burying it in favor of its crappy Facebook messenger app, now Facebook is looking to do the same to WhatsApp, isn't this beginning to smell of Monopoly?
If whatsapp was more universal, and could sync across all your devices such as iPads iPods and even computers with just one phone number (kinda like iMessage should be) it would be the ultimate SMS/bbm/iMessage killer. The company doesn't want to hear it at all. I've tried suggesting it and am shot down by auto replies and no response. It's a deal breaker for me and prevents me from recommending it to people. Maybe Facebook will open it up as a universal app?
This is simply a wakeup call to blackberry messenger, if Facebook acquires whatsapp then we should just expect blackberry to open up its messaging Eco system, and if not then we should start preparing for the funeral of BBM. However I could iPhone could buy the BBM from blackberry :) I know it sounds stupid but you never know :). Oh by the way I heard google wants to buy LINE now :D oh maybe Samsung hahaha..
i dont understand why IOS is the only platform from whatsapp where you have to PAY for it..
on all other platforms its free
as for FB acquiring it i think they should try to stay independent
You should really read WhatsApp terms. iPhone users have to pay 1 time for the App, every other platform don't, but they have to pay 1$ a year after the first year of use.
