Microsoft having just launched its Surface tablet is going on the offensive declaring Apple's new iPad mini as a 'recreational tablet', reports AllThingsD.
Talking about Windows 8 laptops that sell for $279, Steven Sinofsky of Microsoft, said “These are fantastic machines.” Sinofsky contends they’re not netbooks or bargain-basement machines and are good enough to last a student through college.
“It’s $279,” he said, “Here we are, talking about seven-inch recreational tablets for $329.”
That $329 is in reference to Apple's new iPad mini which has been criticized for being sold at a price that is too high.
In what appears to support this determination, Amazon announced that it set a sales record for its Kindle Fire HD tablets the day after Apple announced the smaller tablet.
