These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone 4 on the 5.0 firmware using RedSn0w for Windows. The Mac version of this tutorial is here.

This procedure will cause you to upgrade your baseband potentially ruining your chances for an unlock. Please wait until we have posted a Windows tutorial on how to update to iOS 5 using a custom ipsw if you need an unlock. The jailbreak is also tethered which means you will need to connect your device to the computer each time you reboot. Finally, it may be prudent to save your SHSH Blobs by following this tutorial before continuing.

If you want to jailbreak a lower firmware version you can find the appropriate tutorial here.

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download RedSn0w 0.9.9b6 from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the 5.0 firmware from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. (Note: you do not need to download the 5.0 firmware if you are already on iOS 5.0)

Extract the RedSn0w zip file by double clicking it.

Step Two: (You can skip this step if iOS 5 is already installed on your device)
Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes.

Step Four
Once RedSn0w opens click the Jailbreak button

Apple is no longer signing 5.0 ipsw's. You would have to go to 5.0.1 and use Redsnow from there. Just remember, if you need an unlock that updating will upgrade your baseband.

hi there...if jailbreak 5.0.1 can we still use back RedSn0w 0.9.9b6 (Windows): redsn0w_win_0.9.9b6.zip? or we should use RedSn0w 0.9.9b8 (Windows): redsn0w_win_0.9.9b8.zip? hope anyone will reply and advise on this. great thx

hi, i did this jailbreak and after that my baseband changed to 04.11.08, so i was getting a NO SERVICE message after the jailbreak to 5.0 I had to undo it and go to the official 5.0 Ios so now i can make calls again, but it's impossible to downgrade the baseband !!! so i hope there will be a new jailbreak soon that works with the new baseband.. This thread does not work ! unless someone has a solution???

Hi! I don't want to nag or anything but why has no one come up with an untethered jailbreak and why is it so difficult to enable an unlock for that jailbreak? I am very grateful for all the hard work the iPhone dev team puts in the jailbreak process. I am just curious of what the obstacles are. I also know that apple is doing their best to stop jailbreaking but still anything man made can be hacked right? where is Geohot when you need him. ;)

Hi, The only jailbreak right available is a tethered one which means, everytime you turn you iPhone of or if you run out of battery, you have to connect your iPhone to a computer and run RedSn0w again in order to ge your iPhone up and running.

I had IP-4 firmware 4.3.5 and baseband 04.10.01. I updated to iOS 5 using Sn0wbreeze on my PC (with windows-7). I surely updatede to iOS 5 and preserved my baseband (04.10.01) to unlock using Gevey. It works or you can wait for Redsow. Instructions are below in the link. http://www.howtoarena.com/preserve-baseband-jailbreak-ios-5-with-sn0wbreeze-on-windows/ Be happy and enjoy.

Hmmm, still not seeing an option to use Tiny Umbrella to preserve my 1.59 Baseband on my iphone 4. Is there a way to get to iOS and keep 1.59? Anybody? Thanks

Yup just use redsnow or snowbreeze to create a custom firmware that wont update your bb. Ultrasnow has been update to support ios5 with old bb

If I used Sn0wbreeze to create my custom ipsw to preserve my bandwidth, can I use this version of redsn0w to jailbreak my iphone 4?

TOCS88 - October 19, 2011 at 10:12pm
I'm afraid once you make the custom IPSW with snowbreeze, Redsnow cannot load it. I have tried a few times. :(
