These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone 4 on the 5.0 firmware using RedSn0w for Windows. The Mac version of this tutorial is here.
This procedure will cause you to upgrade your baseband potentially ruining your chances for an unlock. Please wait until we have posted a Windows tutorial on how to update to iOS 5 using a custom ipsw if you need an unlock. The jailbreak is also tethered which means you will need to connect your device to the computer each time you reboot. Finally, it may be prudent to save your SHSH Blobs by following this tutorial before continuing.
If you want to jailbreak a lower firmware version you can find the appropriate tutorial here.
Step One Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage
Download RedSn0w 0.9.9b6 from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the 5.0 firmware from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. (Note: you do not need to download the 5.0 firmware if you are already on iOS 5.0)
Extract the RedSn0w zip file by double clicking it.
Step Two: (You can skip this step if iOS 5 is already installed on your device) Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes.
Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Shift and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won't create any wasted space on your iPhone.
Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the 5.0 firmware ipsw. Click the Choose button to continue.
iTunes will now update your iPhone to the new firmware.
Step Three Launch the redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder we extracted earlier.
**Windows 7 users may want to try running the redsn0w executable mode as an administrator in Windows Vista compatibility. You can do this by right clicking the executable and selecting Properties from the contextual menu.
Step Four Once RedSn0w opens click the Jailbreak button
Step Five Plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button
Step Six RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode. You can find more help with DFU mode here
Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.
Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.
Step Seven Your iPhone will now reboot
Step Eight RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data.
Step Nine Select Cydia from the list of options and click Next.
Step Ten Your iPhone will now be rebooted again and RedSn0w will begin uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel.
Step Eleven Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. When your iPhone finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.
BOOT TETHERED Once you have jailbroken you will need to rerun redsn0w to boot tethered.
Step One From the main RedSn0w menu click the Extras button.
Step Two Select Just boot from the Extras menu to just boot tethered.
*As usual a big thanks to the iPhone Dev-Team and Geohot for their hard work and contribution to the iPhone community.

Damn stuck with NO SERVICE nearly one month!! when will Appple fix this problem? I don't use my Iphone 4 as an fu***** Ipod!!
I know it is not only me who stuck with this issue, but most people also stuck like me too!!!
keep on trying I did the same and after 6-7h trying it finally worked, keep on trying and do it over and over again, mine wasn't sim locked, just jailbreaked! hope it works for you as well
Hi there,
I am jailbroken with iOS 4.3 with iPhone 4. Can I update to iOS 5.0 somehow and jailbreak with redsnow? I tried to update to iOS 5.0 in iTunes but recieved error 3194. Let me know how I should proceed. Thanks in advance.
Apple is no longer signing 5.0 ipsw's. You would have to go to 5.0.1 and use Redsnow from there. Just remember, if you need an unlock that updating will upgrade your baseband.
hi there...if jailbreak 5.0.1 can we still use back RedSn0w 0.9.9b6 (Windows): redsn0w_win_0.9.9b6.zip? or we should use RedSn0w 0.9.9b8 (Windows): redsn0w_win_0.9.9b8.zip? hope anyone will reply and advise on this. great thx
hi, i did this jailbreak and after that my baseband changed to 04.11.08, so i was getting a NO SERVICE message after the jailbreak to 5.0
I had to undo it and go to the official 5.0 Ios so now i can make calls again, but it's impossible to downgrade the baseband !!! so i hope there will be a new jailbreak soon that works with the new baseband..
This thread does not work ! unless someone has a solution???
guys can anyone verify that it is still possible to add new contacts after having a tethered jailbreak? It seems to me that i couldnt and there is no other place where someone is like me ....facing this stupid issue...
Hi! I don't want to nag or anything but why has no one come up with an untethered jailbreak and why is it so difficult to enable an unlock for that jailbreak? I am very grateful for all the hard work the iPhone dev team puts in the jailbreak process. I am just curious of what the obstacles are. I also know that apple is doing their best to stop jailbreaking but still anything man made can be hacked right? where is Geohot when you need him. ;)
Hi,
The only jailbreak right available is a tethered one which means, everytime you turn you iPhone of or if you run out of battery, you have to connect your iPhone to a computer and run RedSn0w again in order to ge your iPhone up and running.
guys after i jailbreak to ios5. it stuck at spinning logo and the i reboot it with redsnow. but the i have another MAJOR problem here which is my ip have no service at all! anyone please help me
I had IP-4 firmware 4.3.5 and baseband 04.10.01. I updated to iOS 5 using Sn0wbreeze on my PC (with windows-7). I surely updatede to iOS 5 and preserved my baseband (04.10.01) to unlock using Gevey. It works or you can wait for Redsow. Instructions are below in the link.

Be happy and enjoy.
My Iphone 4 was jail broken w/ cydia and i think unlocked (not sure). It used to be on ATT i use tmobile. Now it's stuck on apple logo and won't turn off. Before when i could turn it off, i had to force it and it would reboot with the pineapple, but it never recognized my sim card. i don't know what to do i'm without a phone. Any help would be grateful!
Hmmm, still not seeing an option to use Tiny Umbrella to preserve my 1.59 Baseband on my iphone 4. Is there a way to get to iOS and keep 1.59? Anybody? Thanks
